Should oil companies pay more tax on big profits?

Leading oil producers have been facing calls from unions to pay additional tax on their 'excess profits', after BP announced a rise in profits for the second quarter of the year. But will such tax really help with fuel prices? Is it fair to pounce on businesses merely for being successful? What are your thoughts?
