Jack Straw's plans for new 'Titan' Super Prisons is certainly not the answer to the problems in the Justice System.

I think that England's going the same way as the US with its prisons and criminal justice system. New crimes seem to be invented on a daily basis - should we be concerned with the correlation of this fact and increased privatisation of our prison system? I dont want to come across as a conspiracy theorist, but a huge amount of money is made from the construction and maintenance of prisons – newspapers talk about how much a prisoner costs taxpayers, but how much money are construction, cleaning, and catering industries profiting from the swelling prison population? We need to look at reducing the amount of prisoners who are on short term sentences, and concentrate on locking up the minority of violent individuals who pose a real threat.

I dont see a problem with increasing prison spaces, surely that's better than overcrowding them? Everyday you hear of a new stabbing or shooting. Young people have lost their sense of right and wrong, we need to get touch to show people that their actions have consequences.

I'm not entirely sure what kind of punishment is suitable.... if there isn't a viable alternative, then super prisons are the logical way forward. Community development is all well and good, but these things take a long time and while that is being tackled, the crime levels continue to rise.

I would very much like to agree with you, that a better alternative must exist other than locking offenders away in small rooms for varying amounts of time. What I have never heard from people such as you is what the alternatives should be, other than the we should be kind to the offenders and educate them to a better way of life. But that started 50+ years ago and we are in a worse situation today, especially with younger and ethnic elements of our society digging even deeper holes for themselves. Speak up! Stop moaning and put your new and innovative ideas on the table because all of your ideas of the past two decades have proven to be woefully wrong, certainly no better than those you oppose!
